Zac H’s 1968 El Camino

Built From The Ground Up

Zac H’s 1968 El Camino

Zac was looking to do a 3rd El Camino project and his cousin told him about this one, that he ended up buying off Craigslist. The original owner bought it new in California after it came off the Fremont assembly line, and owned it till 2015. He then sold it to a gentleman that was going to make it a father/son project, but realized they were in over their heads, and posted it up for sale. That’s when Zac bought it, and did a complete frame off. He did all the work himself with a little help from his dad here and there.

Zac kept the numbers matching 396, but built a 427 bbc for it. Zac used a 454 block bored .040 with a 3.76 stoke Eagle crank, H beam Eagle rods, 11.1 JE pistons, a Comp 280 duration and .646 lift roller cam, a Eldebrock high rise aluminum intake, MSD distributor and 6AL ignition box. All in front of a rebuilt TH400 with a B&M stage 2 shift kit, B&M large external transmission cooler and B&M deep aluminum pan. The cooling system is a 3 core, Be Cool radiator, that keeps it cool at 175-180 degrees. Even on a 90-100 degree day outside. The 12 bolt posi is all new as well, with Richmond 3.08 gears.

It took Zac about 1.5 years to strip it down and rebuild the whole thing. He still needs to put on the bed, drip rail and door trim (which he has already), then it will be complete!

"Great experience! SS396.com had what I needed when other competitors didn’t, also the prices were better! "

-Zac H
