This is Randy’s 1968 El Camino SS396. It is car #275, finished in Tripoli Turquoise over Black with a 4 speed and a posi. He purchased the car in 1979 in Victoria BC, Canada.
He didn’t purchase the car at 18 because he was a huge El Camino fan, He purchased it because of the girl who used to drive it. The car culture in Victoria when he was a teenager was sort of like American Graffiti and the white Thunderbird scenario he says.
His little secret is the original engine is gone, he never had it. The story goes, this car was bought by the owner of the dealership for his daughter. At some point the 396 failed and they went to the parts department and picked out a ’66-’69 427/425 horsepower short block off the shelf. That’s what is in it today. The M20 was gone as well, and now has a M21. It has drum brakes and manual steering, which all work flawlessly do keep the 60’s vibe alive. Real hot rods have 3 pedals!
Well, after a couple of marriages, a couple of heart attacks and a whole lot of love, here he is. Randy says he definitely gets more enjoyment out of the car now than he ever did. Randy says his car is a blast to drive and a handful. If you look at the car closely, you will see it was a labor of love.
