Ground Up’s 1970 Camaro Z/28 – currently undergoing restoration in 2017

In 1970 Chevrolet ushered in a new era of muscle cars when it introduced the first model of the second generation of Camaros. This model is the 1970 (also known as 1970 1/2) Camaro. With Chevrolet having major success from its previous generation of Camaros (1967-69) and outside federal regulations not affecting the automotive industry yet. The 1970 Camaro was born and seen as a superior car to the first generation models. Major changes in the second generation were the overall design of the car which was a sleeker and more sophisticated design that earned itself the nickname “the hugger” in order to compete with the new expensive European sports cars. The Camaro also got a power upgrade with the new 360 HP 350 cubic inch engine, essentially the same as the Corvette LT1 engine. For the first time a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 could be ordered as an option with the Z/28. Without a doubt that the 1970 Camaro was the superior muscle car of the time and a car that Ground Up had to have. But finding one proved to be a challenge all in itself. Despite the 1970 Camaro being as popular as it was, there were only 8,733 produced in 1970 making a nice 1970 Camaro more difficult to find than the previous generation.

It wasn’t until early 2012 that Ground Up was able to track down the highly desired muscle car and add it to the family of cars. What we found was a numbers matching Daytona Yellow Z28. It came with the highly desired 350 LT1 engine, an M21 four-speed manual transmission, F41 suspension, and a 410 positraction rear-end.  The car currently sits in the Ground Up showroom awaiting its turn for a full frame-off Ground Up restoration to restore this pristine muscle car to its original glory.
